Two years ago Lisa Ledbury and her family saw the potential to turn a dated single storey bungalow into their perfect family home. They snapped up the tired home, located in Sutton Coldfield, moved in, and started planning their dream renovation.
Lisa explains, “The bungalow was typical of its era; three bedrooms, still in a single storey configuration and with closed spaces and limited natural light. However, we had a vision and could see the potential to turn this into the spacious, modern family home we desired.
“We instructed a local architect and following months of design and planning finally got everything in place to move forward with the project. We were incredibly fortunate that at the same time the house next door was available to rent so we could live away from the work but close enough to be on top of progress.”
Initial renovation plans had moved more into the realms of a new build project, with most of the existing bungalow being completely replaced to accommodate the new five bedroom, four bathroom family home over two floors.
“Our priority was to create more space focused around a modern, open plan design that would flood the home with natural light. We wanted a seamless flow to the living spaces and a wow factor on entering the home. The garden was a key factor in deciding this was the plot for us and we wanted the layout and the use of glass to create an uninterrupted flow from the front door to this outside space.”
With building work underway Lisa could turn her attention to the detailed specifications for the interior of the home.
“I originally discovered Concreate before we had even bought this home. Knowing we were considering a renovation project in the future I was always keeping my eye out for new product ideas and first saw Concreate when it launched at the Home Build and Renovation Show at the NEC in 2013.
“I was keen to explore concrete floor ideas and immediately loved this product. I felt that some of the other concrete options I’d looked at felt too uniform and cold, but the natural warm texture and unique patina of each Concreate panel made this product feel much more homely.”
When the project finally kicked off Lisa went back to the Concreate website to locate a local Concreate retailer and contacted Home of Floors in Staffordshire who offered expert advice and went on to supply and install the floors.
Concreate Natural Grey floors have been installed throughout the downstairs living spaces. On entering the double height glass fronted entrance to the home you are met with a clean, bright modern hallway where the floors begin. The impactful entrance is designed to deliver a seamless eye line straight through to the living spaces and out to the garden.
Concreate floors extend through the open plan living, dining and kitchen spaces, and have also been laid in the utility, bathroom and cloakroom.
To introduce an element of contrast to the flooring Concreate Smoke White Oak wood floors have been laid in the study and TV snug. With matching tongue and groove profiles the two materials combine without the need for transitions to maintain a seamless flow between the different floor surfaces.
Lisa’s attention to detail in the selection of fittings and furnishings that complement the floors undoubtedly create the wow factor in this home. A modern and sleek kitchen from Homebase introduces contrasting grey tones and gloss surfaces, and the bespoke dining table sits with the glass theme whilst adding pops of orange in the metal legs, finished with contemporary chairs that introduce elements of wood to the palette.
Concreate wall panels have been used to clad the window seat looking out to the garden, softened with a selection of perfectly coordinating textiles from made.com.
“It’s been ten months since work started and we are nearly there, with just some landscaping left to complete in the garden.
“It’s been hard work, but enjoyable, especially now we have moved back into our dream home, designed and finished just how we wanted it.
“I am thrilled with the floors; they help bring the whole open plan nature of the scheme together, working harmoniously with all of the glass we have introduced to promote natural light and contemporary styling.
“The floors are beautifully soft and warm underfoot, plus we have been able to install under floor heating, something that wasn’t possible with some of the other concrete options we looked at.
“It’s a busy household with three teenage children and our dog but the floors have proven to be incredibly practical and easy to keep clean. We’re so delighted our family home is now complete. We have the modern, bright open plan living space we had envisaged, finished to own contemporary interior design styles and specifications.”
